Thermostats & Vacations – What To Set It At?

The holidays are here! Families are traveling and when they come home, they don’t want to come back to a freezing house. At the same time, they want to be thrifty with their dollars and energy costs.

To decide on the perfect temperature setting while on vacation, it depends on what homeowners normally set their temperature at while they are home. When on vacation, the thermostat should five to ten degrees lower than the normal setting. If it is normally set at 70 while they are home, they should set it at 60 while they are away.

This way there is no wasting energy, and the house won’t be overly warm or cold when they return home.  (Daily Energy Tip: Energy.gov reports that turning your thermostat lower by 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours per day will help you see an energy usage reduction of 5 to 15 percent per year on your bill.)

When homeowners completely turn off the heat, they are risking frozen pipes.
